Democratic State Central Committee Endorses Resolutions on Minimum Wage, Equal Pay and Voting Rights

BATON ROUGE — At today’s Democratic State Central Committee meeting at the state Capitol, the committee members unanimously endorsed U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu and U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond for re-election.

“Louisiana Democrats are proud to endorse our senior senator, Mary Landrieu, and Congressman Cedric Richmond,” said Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Carter Peterson. “Our governing body also weighed in on several issues, including supporting measures to restore our coast, make the workplace more equitable, support for victims of domestic violence and restore funding for our public universities. Our Party is unified and looking forward to a successful 2014.”

The Democratic State Central Committee endorsed resolutions on the following issues:

  • Urging Congress to pass the FAIR Act to ensure Louisiana receives a fair share of the revenues from offshore drilling;

  • Opposing efforts to hinder the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority East’s lawsuit from moving forward;

  • Urging elected officials to support non-discrimination legislation in housing and employment;

  • Encouraging legislators to take action on mass incarceration issues;

  • Supporting the Our Walmart campaign;

  • Supporting fast-food worker strikes and legislation to increase Louisiana’s minimum wage;

  • Opposing any legislation that attacks public-sector workers’ retirement security;

  • Endorsing efforts to update the Voting Rights Act;

  • Backing legislation to promote pay equity for all Louisiana workers;

  • Calling on Gov. Bobby Jindal and the legislature to accept federal Medicaid dollars to expand access to affordable health care;

  • Supporting the full restoration of higher education funding in Louisiana; and

  • Supporting domestic violence services and programs.
