New Orleans, Louisiana – Campaign for Louisiana Communications Director Andrew Zucker released the following statement today regarding Bill Cassidy’s government shutdown:

“For weeks Bill Cassidy refused to act responsibly in order to avert a government shutdown, and after recklessly voting to make it a reality, now he must own it. Bill Cassidy’s government shutdown could severely damage our economy and have devastating consequences for Louisiana’s small-business owners, veterans, seniors, students and homeowners.

“Cassidy’s government shutdown means that thousands of hard-working Louisianans can’t go to work on Tuesday or receive paychecks to support their families. Small business loans, home mortgages and Social Security claims won’t process, students who rely on work-study programs and federal Perkins loans to afford a college education won’t receive their funds, and veterans’ benefits could be indefinitely delayed.

“Bill Cassidy’s decision to shut down the government in order to block implementing the same health care reforms he tried to pass at the state level only six years ago is a shameful political calculation that will only reinforce his growing reputation as someone who can’t be counted on to fight for Louisiana families. Rather than dig in, Bill Cassidy should stop playing politics with people’s livelihoods and immediately end this government shutdown.”
