Authored and Campaigned on Legislation Nearly Identical to Affordable Care Act

BATON ROUGE — After the NOLA Defender uncovered yesterday that then-state Sen. Bill Cassidy authored legislation to establish a state-run insurance exchange and even touted the bill on his campaign website, now Congressman Bill Cassidy is refusing to comment on his past support for one of the key elements of the Affordable Care Act.

“Bill Cassidy can’t hide from his past and the fact that he was pushing key elements of the Affordable Care Act in Louisiana long before it was law,” said Kirstin Alvanitakis, communications director for the Louisiana Democratic Party. “Bill Cassidy is only for or against something when it is good politics for him — not whether it is the best thing for the people of Louisiana.”

According to the NOLA Defender, “When reached for comment, Cassidy declined to elaborate on his position.”

Gov. Bobby Jindal rejected setting up a state-run exchange for Louisiana and will instead allow the federal government to operate an exchange in the state.
