Signed Tea Party Petition to Raise Taxes on Louisiana’s Middle-Class and Working Families

BATON ROUGE — Last week Bill Cassidy signed onto Tea Party Sen. Ted Cruz’ petition calling for a flat tax, which would raise taxes on middle-class Louisianians while cutting taxes for millionaires and billionaires. But this week, he says he is still researching a flat tax and can’t decide whether or not he supports it.

“Six days later and Bill Cassidy is refusing to give a straight answer on whether he supports the flat tax — that he signed onto — even though it would harm Louisiana’s middle-class families,” said Kirstin Alvanitakis, communications director for the Louisiana Democratic Party. “He says that he needs more time to research the issue, but that didn’t stop him from rushing to vote for higher flood insurance rates on Louisiana families and businesses in March.”

Cassidy told The Advocate, “My statement is not predicated on that (flat tax) debate. I will make a statement on that when I’ve researched that more.”

“Bill Cassidy is going to have to decide whether he wants to stand with the Tea Party groups that are pushing this tax or stand up for Louisiana families and businesses,” Alvanitakis said.

The following conservative groups have all endorsed the flat tax:
