The Louisiana Democratic Party is excited to announce that democratic champion, Elsie Burkhalter will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award at this years Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in New Orleans. Each year the party honors leaders who have given freely of themselves to make this world better for others. Previous winners have included leaders like Senator John Breaux, Ambassador Lindy Boggs and Congressman Buddy Leach. This year we have already announced one of our recipients, Felicia Kahn.

Today we announce another amazing woman, in a historic year for women. This year the party will also honor Elsie Burkhalter.

Elsie Burkhalter is a champion of democratic values having served in numerous roles inside our party and most recently as First Vice Chair. She is a former Slidell City Council member, longtime St. Tammany Parish teacher union leader and she has attended every DNC since 1984 to 2012. She also represented teachers locally and nationally through the Louisiana Federation of Teachers.

“She has been unwavering in her work, efforts for educators, our community and ultimately our state. We appreciate and respect all that she has done to make sure that this state is better for our continued generations. Thank you for your service, Elsie.” Said Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party
