REP. MIKE JOHNSON PUTS HIS POLITICS AHEAD OF THE PEOPLE HE SERVES YET AGAIN

Baton Rouge, LA – Republican Congressman Mike Johnson (LA-4) is playing political games with his constituents’ lives and livelihoods by campaigning against the widely popular and much-needed American Rescue Plan.

“Congressman Mike Johnson continues to put his political ambitions ahead of the people he serves. Johnson’s opposition to direct cash payments, enhanced unemployment benefits, and funding for school safety and vaccines is an affront to working-families in his district and further proof that Johnson has been in DC so long that he’s lost touch with Louisianans’ needs. Once again, Congressman Johnson has proven that he’s a career politician, who would rather play national politics than roll up his sleeves and solve problems for the people of Louisiana,” said Ben Riggs, Communications Director for the Louisiana Democratic Party.

The American Rescue Plan enjoys broad support from the American people, with 76% saying they approve the bill. The bill also enjoys the support of local and state leaders across the country and from both parties. The plan provides $1,400 direct payments to Americans, more than $100 billion to K-12 schools for safety measures, funding for vaccine distribution and testing, as well as enhanced unemployment benefits for workers negatively impacted by the pandemic. Federal unemployment benefits are currently set to expire on March 14, 2021. With the vast majority of COVID-relief funds from prior packages either spent or allocated, Louisiana desperately needs the American Rescue Plan to beat the pandemic, further safeguard our schools, and get our economy back on track.
