Louisiana Democratic Party Announces Updates to Delegate Selection Plan

BATON ROUGE, LA – Wednesday, the Louisiana Democratic Party announced key details in its delegate selection plan for the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

The Democratic National Committee awarded Louisiana Democrats four bonus delegates based on moving the Presidential Preference Primary to April 4th, 2020. Three of these bonus delegates are allocated as district level delegates and one is allocated as an at-large delegate, bringing the total amount of delegates from 57 to 61.

Using election results data, the Louisiana Democratic Party allocated 35 district-level delegates to each congressional district. These district-level delegates are determined by the Democratic performance in each congressional district between the 2019 gubernatorial election and 2016 presidential election.

To explain these details and the delegate selection process, Executive Director Stephen Handwerk will hold a livestream Thursday, Dec. 5 from 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. The party will host multiple informational sessions with community organizations and partners in the months to come.

“I’m excited to take another step in our delegate selection plan as we move toward the 2020 Democratic National Convention and presidential election,” Stephen Handwerk, Executive Director of the Louisiana Democratic Party said. “Our plan and our newly awarded bonus delegates ensure the delegation we select to represent Louisiana will reflect the rich diversity of our state.”
