Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Sen. Karen Carter Peterson on Justice for George Floyd and Weekend of Protests

BATON ROUGE, LA – Monday, Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Carter Peterson released the following statement on the weekend of protests calling for an end to police brutality and justice for George Floyd:

“My heart goes out to the family of George Floyd, whose murder is another tragic case of the violence Black men and women face every day in America,” Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party said. “No one can watch the video footage of what police did to George Floyd without being horrified. As a nation, we must demand true justice and end the systemic racism that has pervaded our communities and killed Black Americans for centuries. But this responsibility isn’t only on the protestors in the streets. It’s the responsibility of every American and every elected leader to call out injustice and demand lasting change.

“We all must answer the clarion call of a nation that demands action; it demands we have uncomfortable conversations about institutionalized racism.  We can’t let ourselves be lulled into complacency that time repeatedly tempts us with when the cameras move on. We demand justice. We demand lasting change. And we will work to elect leaders at every level who will fight for Black lives and heal our nation through justice, progress, and action.”
