Senate Bill 125 Advances from Health and Welfare Committee, Awaits Consideration by Full Senate
BATON ROUGE — The Senate Health and Welfare Committee today voted in favor of legislation that would expand access to health insurance for more than 400,000 uninsured kids, people with disabilities and working parents at or near to the poverty line.
“Today a bipartisan group of senators put people’s health before politics and voted to move forward with a plan that would expand access to affordable health care for more than 400,000 uninsured Louisianans,” said Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Carter Peterson. “This is the right thing to do, and it’s the fiscally responsible thing to do. The federal government will pick up the entire tab for the first three years, and then the Legislature will revisit the issue. We thank the courageous legislators who are working with us on this proposal that will help all Louisianans by decreasing the overall cost of health care.”
Sen. Fred Mills, Sen. Yvonne Dorsey-Colomb, Sen. Elbert Guillory and Sen. Ben Nevers voted to move Senate Bill 125, which as amended would expand access to health insurance using federal Medicaid dollars, from the Health and Welfare Committee today. Next the full Senate will take up the legislation.
