BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana Democratic Party today responded with extreme dismay that Donald Trump has named as his running mate Governor Mike Pence of Indiana, the most extreme and fundamentally unqualified vice presidential candidate in a generation. As governor, Pence alienated businesses, divided communities and embarrassed Hoosiers by signing divisive and discriminatory legislation. The result was economic catastrophe for Indiana’s economy and small businesses.

A selfish, reckless governor more concerned with advancing his national profile than serving the needs of his constituents is a familiar, unwelcome story for Louisiana families. While working people in Louisiana are still grappling with the fallout from 8 years of failed Jindal policies, Indiana is suffering under a governor whose anti-business, anti-family polices have driven jobs out of their state and lowered wages for working people.

“It won’t surprise voters in Louisiana to hear the Republicans are pushing a candidate with an extreme agenda, somebody that gave sweetheart deals to corporate donors at the expense of working families,” said Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party. “What should surprise them is how incredibly bad Mike Pence has been at his job, and that Donald Trump and the GOP want to promote him to VP as a reward for his failures.”
