Karen Carter Peterson Releases Statement on Racist Threat Sent to Mayoral Candidate
Baton Rouge, LA – Thursday, Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party, released the following statement after a racist death threat letter was sent to Commissioner Steven Jackson, Shreveport Mayoral candidate:
“Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s I am not sure I knew what the year 2018 would look like, but I am sure I thought that racist anonymous death threats showing up on people’s porches would be relegated to history. As we saw yesterday that is not the case.
“Attacks like these have no place in our political system, which is the resounding message coming from Democrats and our Republican brothers and sisters. While these acts certainly shock people, they also tend to empower the Candidates to fight harder, longer and smarter. We are encouraged by the way the Commissioner is handling this and we agree that it is always the right time to stand up to racism and bullies.”
The Louisiana Democratic Party urges candidates facing this sort of harassment, intimidation, or bullying to contact law enforcement and please report it to us as well. Contact the Louisiana Democratic Party by calling our office at 225-336-4155 or sending us an email at communications@lademo.org.
