Louisiana Democratic Party Condemns Trump Tweets, LAGOP Congressional Delegation Silence on Issue

BATON ROUGE, LAThe Louisiana Democratic Party wholeheartedly condemns the tweets President Trump made toward the Democratic freshmen Congresswomen.

“The President’s statement only serves to cultivate hatred and we refuse to sit idly by as it plagues our country and state,” Karen Carter Peterson, Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party said. “While we are committed to ending racism and bigotry in America, Louisiana’s Republicans in Congress can hardly say the same. Their support for these racist remarks is shameful. Louisiana is one of the most diverse states in the nation and our congressional delegation was elected to represent all of us – not just those who look like them or agree with them. Our diversity and freedom to dissent is part of the strength of our country, and nothing is more American than fighting for a more perfect union. If only Louisiana’s Republicans in Congress agreed.”

BACKGROUND

Senator Bill Cassidy said he thought it was “rich” that congressional members called the tweet “racist”

Rep. Abraham, in his official congressional capacity, stood by Trump’s statements and offered to “pay for their tickets” for them to leave.

Senator John Kennedy failed to rebuke the President in a statement made to reporters, playing politics instead.

The rest of the Republican Congressional delegation have failed to make a statement condemning the President for his racist tweet.
