RELEASE: Louisiana Democratic Party Applauds Passing of Governor Edwards’ Teacher Pay Raises on House Floor

Baton Rouge, LA – On Monday, the Louisiana House of Representatives unanimously passed SCR 3 providing for pay raises to Louisiana teachers and school support staff. This bill would give a $1000-a-year pay raise for public school teachers and $500-a-year pay raise for school support staff. The Louisiana Democratic Party endorsed this proposal in March.

“I am incredibly proud of all of my colleagues for unanimously passing Governor Edwards’ teacher pay raise bill,” Karen Carter Peterson, Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party said. “Teachers deserve it, actually they deserve much more. This is a start. Teacher pay raises are an investment in the future of our state by investing in our most valuable resource – our children. This is a great first step toward prioritizing education in Louisiana and I’m proud to have been a part of it.”

“SCR 3 unanimously passing the House of Representatives is a clear demonstration of how essential teacher pay raises are for Louisiana,” Stephen Handwerk, Executive Director of the Louisiana Democratic Party said. “Today, we chose to put aside partisan differences and support Governor Edwards’ plan that provide for our teachers, our schools, and our children and our state is better for it. Just like we did today, let’s keep working together for the betterment of our state, our communities, and Louisiana’s future.”
