Statement On Bill Cassidy’s Opposition To Bipartisan Compromise To Re-Open Government, Avert Default
New Orleans, Louisiana – Campaign for Louisiana Communications Director Andrew Zucker released the following statement today regarding Bill Cassidy’s opposition to the bipartisan compromise that would end his government shutdown and avert the possibility of the U.S. defaulting on its debt for the first time in history:
“Bill Cassidy voted to shut down the government, repeatedly voted against re-opening it and now says he will vote against the bipartisan compromise to end his government shutdown and prevent the U.S. from defaulting on its debt for the first time in history. So while it comes as a welcome relief to Louisiana families that more responsible members of the House GOP intend to listen to their constituents, do what’s right and end this reckless and unnecessary manufactured crisis, it can’t be overlooked that if Bill Cassidy has his way, the shutdown will continue and the U.S. will soon be unable to pay its bills.
“Bill Cassidy’s government shutdown has cut funding for crucial programs that feed pregnant women, young children and seniors. It has forced up to 320,000 veterans in Louisiana to plan for the possibility that their VA benefits, disability compensation or GI Bill stipends might not arrive as scheduled. It has hurt small businesses, forced thousands of workers across the state to go to work without receiving paychecks and closed national parks vital to Louisiana’s tourism industry.
“Bill Cassidy’s decision to shut down the government in order to delay the same exact health care reforms he tried to pass at the state level in 2007 was a shameful political calculation that has had devastating consequences for far too many Louisiana families. With many of his more reasonable colleagues poised to help end the government shutdown of Bill Cassidy’s making, voters expect for Cassidy to stop playing political games that hurt Louisianans and start repairing his growing reputation as someone who can’t be counted on to fight for Louisiana families.”
