As polls show Rep. John Bel Edwards pulling ahead of Senator David Vitter, Edwards continued traveling across Louisiana and sharing his message of putting Louisiana first. In the last week, the Edwards campaign spent time knocking on doors, calling voters and signing up volunteers – while also earning the endorsement of the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association and more than a half-dozen Louisiana mayors. Meanwhile, Senator Vitter’s campaign spent the last week denying any legal wrongdoing in the now-infamous “Spygate” incident and taking criticism that their campaign is running “slanted and vicious attacks.”
In the past 24 hours, there have been several polls showing Edwards with a strong lead 18 days out from election day. Edwards is capturing a significant portion of Republicans and a majority of women voters, both of whom are deeply unsatisfied with Senator Vitter, despite his 16-year career in Washington, DC.
“With 18 days to go in the run-off, John Bel Edwards continues earning strong support from law enforcement, veterans and Louisianans from all across the state. John Bel’s message of putting Louisiana first is resonating,” said Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, chairwoman of the Louisiana Democratic Party. “Senator Vitter is running a campaign straight out of Washington, DC – bitter partisanship, distorted accusations and obscene personal attacks. Louisiana deserves more from its next Governor, and John Bel Edwards and his campaign are working hard to keep up the momentum.”
