Backer of Cruz Petition, Senate Conservatives Fund, Says ‘We Definitely Won’t Support Bill Cassidy’

BATON ROUGE — Even though Bill Cassidy signed onto Tea Party Sen. Ted Cruz’ petition calling for a flat tax, he has yet to take a position on the proposal that would hike taxes on Louisiana middle-class families and cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires. The online petition by Cruz says, “We need a tax code that is simple, fair, flat, and that protects our freedoms.”

On Tuesday, the Times-Picayune asked if Cassidy actually supported a flat tax that he signed onto. Cassidy’s spokesperson said “he hasn’t discussed the flat tax issue with his boss.”

“It’s day three and not even a Tweet from Bill Cassidy about his position on the flat tax, despite proudly boasting his support for Ted Cruz’s petition on Tuesday,”  said Kirstin Alvanitakis, communications director for the Louisiana Democratic Party. “The people of Louisiana can’t trust Bill Cassidy if he can’t answer a simple question about a plan to raise taxes on Louisiana’s middle-class families. From the looks of things, conservatives don’t trust Bill Cassidy either.”

The Cruz petition was paid for by the Senate Conservatives Fund, a PAC that yesterday posted a statement that “we definitely won’t support Bill Cassidy” and would be looking at candidate Rob Maness, who has endorsed the flat tax.
